Located off the east coast of France, Corsica is one of the most popular summer holiday destinations in Europe.  Renowned for it's beautiful terrain that ranges from idyllic sun-bleached beaches to hiking tracks that wind through it's famous mountains.  Corsica's architecture is reflective of it's long history as a strategic point of invasion - at times it has been occupied by the Ancient Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Lombards, Arabs, Tuscans, Moors, Genoese, Spanish, and the French; during World War II it was captured by the Italians and was at one point occupied by the German forces in retreat.  Such a chequered history has left a legacy of important sights, including the house in which Napolean Bonaparte was born (in Ajaccio, the capital); the Old Port (Vieux Port) in Bastia; a Genoese fortress in Girolata; Greek churches in Cargese; Roman ruins at Aleria; a Pisan tower at Nonza; a Romanesque church in Carbini, and a prehistoric fortification at Casteddu d'Araghju.

Corsica is serviced by several airports, including Ajaccio-Campo dell'Oro Airport, Bastia-Poretta Airport, Calvi-Sainte-Catherine Airport and Figari Sud-Corse Airport.  Flights from the United Kingdom include Easy Jet from London to both Ajaccio and Bastia, Monarch Airlines from London to Figari, and Thomson Fly from both London and Manchester to Figari.  As the island is large and public transport sparse, it is vital that you have your own means of getting around, such as with a hire car.  Ada, Citer, Europcar, Avis, Sixt and Hertz are all present on the island, though if you are travelling in the busy summer months it is advisable to book ahead of arrival to ensure there is a car available for the length of your stay.
